William Ruto Allies Admit Impeaching Rigathi Gachagua Was a Costly Political Miscalculation

For the first time since the dramatic fallout that reshaped Kenya’s political landscape, influential Mt Kenya leaders within President ’s inner circle are openly conceding that the head of state may have made a grave miscalculation in masterminding the impeachment of his former deputy, .

The rare admission signals a notable shift in tone from a region that was once firmly united behind the president’s controversial decision.

According to leaders privy to internal discussions, there is growing acknowledgment that the impeachment, though intended to consolidate power and neutralize internal dissent, instead alienated a critical support base in Mt Kenya.

What was initially framed as a strategic political move is now being reassessed as a catalyst for discontent and mistrust.

Sources indicate that the removal of Gachagua created a vacuum in regional leadership, leaving many residents feeling politically orphaned.

While the president sought to reassert authority and discipline within his administration, the move has been blamed for weakening grassroots mobilization and eroding goodwill among voters who viewed Gachagua as their primary link to the highest office.

Privately, some Mt Kenya allies admit the impeachment hardened perceptions that the region was being sidelined after playing a pivotal role in Ruto’s rise to power.

The fallout has since manifested in lukewarm support for government initiatives, muted public enthusiasm, and a resurgence of political rivals seeking to capitalize on the dissatisfaction.

Despite these reflections, the leaders maintain that the president remains focused on governance and national unity. However, they acknowledge that repairing ties with Mt Kenya will require more than rhetoric.

Calls are growing for deliberate political outreach, inclusive decision-making, and symbolic gestures that reassure the region of its place at the heart of government.

As Kenya edges closer to the next electoral cycle, the candid admissions underscore a sobering reality within Ruto’s camp: the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua may have achieved short-term political objectives, but its long-term costs are now impossible to ignore.
