Fresh political anxiety is emerging within government circles after influential Mt Kenya leaders reportedly admitted that the removal of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua may have backfired politically.
Reports highlighted growing concern that the move weakened the region’s bargaining power within national leadership structures.
For the first time, senior figures aligned with President William Ruto are openly questioning whether the impeachment was handled strategically.
Some insiders now believe the decision exposed deep cracks within the ruling coalition and unsettled voters who had strongly backed the government.
Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria was among leaders who expressed regret about how the situation unfolded.
He suggested the aftermath created confusion among Mt Kenya supporters and reduced confidence in the region’s long-term position in government.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga also warned that Gachagua’s exit created a leadership vacuum.
According to him, the former deputy president had played a major role in coordinating regional political unity and advancing Mt Kenya’s national agenda.
While President Ruto had previously defended the move, critics now argue that it may have unexpectedly boosted Gachagua’s political relevance.
Since leaving office, he has maintained strong public visibility, speaking frequently and positioning himself as a defender of regional interests.
Analysts warn that rising sympathy for Gachagua across sections of Mt Kenya could complicate the president’s path to re-election in 2027.
With alliances shifting and political loyalties being tested, the region is once again becoming a key battleground that could shape the outcome of the next general election.
