The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is courting four Members of Parliament from the Nyanza region who currently serve under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, with discussions underway for them to defect ahead of the 2027 general elections.
LDP presidential aspirant Fred Ogola confirmed the ongoing negotiations, revealing that the talks have reached an advanced stage.
He described the potential defections as part of a deliberate strategy to expand the party’s foothold in Nyanza, a region long regarded as ODM’s political bedrock.
According to Ogola, the interest shown by the lawmakers underscores LDP’s growing appeal as a credible alternative for leaders seeking fresh political platforms.
“These discussions reflect the changing dynamics in our political landscape.
Leaders are looking for platforms that align with their vision and offer genuine opportunities for service,” Ogola said.
He added that LDP is positioning itself as a party with national reach and a commitment to leadership renewal, making it an attractive option for politicians re-evaluating their current affiliations.
Political observers note that defections in the buildup to elections are a familiar feature of Kenya’s multiparty democracy.
However, the targeting of ODM legislators in its traditional stronghold signals a calculated move by LDP to disrupt established voting patterns and challenge the dominance of the Raila Odinga-led party.
If the defections materialize, they could inject fresh competition into Nyanza’s political arena and force a realignment of voter loyalties.
Neither the four MPs nor ODM leadership have issued official statements regarding the reported negotiations.
Sources close to the discussions, however, indicate that the lawmakers are carefully weighing their options, with formal announcements expected in the coming months should the talks conclude favourably.
LDP has in recent months intensified its groundwork across various regions, seeking to position itself as a formidable player in the 2027 election cycle.
The party’s overtures in Nyanza are seen as part of a broader bid to build momentum and attract experienced legislators capable of mobilizing grassroots support.
As political realignments begin to take shape ahead of the next general election, all eyes remain on the region to see whether ODM will retain its grip or face significant erosion from within.
