Fresh debate over former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his possible 2027 presidential ambitions has intensified after Nyandarua Senator John Methu openly suggested that the opposition should consider backing him for the top seat.
Speaking during Gachagua’s tour in the UK, Methu described the former DP as the “engine” driving the opposition movement and urged him to return home quickly to continue mobilising support against President William Ruto’s administration.
The remarks have now sparked fresh tensions within opposition circles, with analysts warning that early succession politics could weaken unity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Methu argued that leaders with strong voter numbers should not settle for secondary roles, insisting Gachagua commands significant influence in the Mt Kenya region.
At the same time, legal experts remain divided over whether Gachagua can legally contest the presidency following his impeachment battles.
Constitutional lawyer Charles Kanjama maintains that the former DP still has room to fight in court and remains eligible until all appeals are exhausted.
However, political analyst Javas Bigambo argues that unless courts overturn the impeachment, electoral authorities may face constitutional barriers in clearing him to run.
Bigambo further noted that despite the legal uncertainty, Gachagua still holds enormous political weight in Mt Kenya, giving him strong bargaining power within opposition negotiations.
He argued that such influence could even place him in a stronger negotiating position than opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka as parties position themselves for the high-stakes 2027 race.
