In a letter dated Monday, March 2, 2026, and signed by County Director of Trade Peter M. Migosi, the county government said the relocation is part of its broader strategy to upgrade trading infrastructure and improve working conditions for small-scale business operators.
According to the notice, traders are required to remove their goods and dismantle temporary structures within the stipulated period to allow contractors to commence construction works.
The project is aligned with the national government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to strengthen micro, small and medium enterprises across the country.
“This initiative reflects both the national and county governments’ dedication to creating jobs, promoting entrepreneurship, and improving trading conditions for the people of Mvita,” the letter stated.
Temporary relocation plan
The county government has assured traders that temporary arrangements have been made to minimise disruption.

During the construction period, traders will be relocated to an open-air market along Majengo Road, where they will continue operating until the new facility is completed.
Officials indicated that the modern market is expected to be ready in less than 12 months. Once complete, priority in stall allocation will be given to current traders, although additional space will also be available for new applicants.
The upgraded market will feature improved storage facilities, better sanitation systems, enhanced security measures and a more organised layout designed to ease congestion and improve customer flow.
County authorities say the new structure will provide a safer and more conducive business environment for both traders and shoppers.
Compliance and enforcement
The county has urged traders to comply with the directive within the given timeframe to avoid enforcement measures under Mombasa County laws.

The redevelopment of Makupa/Majengo Market is part of a wider urban renewal initiative by the county government aimed at modernising traditional markets, boosting economic activity and enhancing competitiveness within Mombasa.
County officials say the project marks a significant step toward transforming local markets into sustainable business hubs capable of supporting the growing number of entrepreneurs in the coastal region.
