Tanzania Brace for Stern Test Against Hosts Morocco in AFCON Round of 16

Tanzania will face the toughest challenge of their Africa Cup of Nations campaign when they take on tournament hosts Morocco in the Round of 16 clash at the TotalEnergies AFCON on Sunday night in Rabat.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm EAT, with Morocco entering the encounter as overwhelming favourites, backed by home advantage, pedigree and a squad packed with European-based stars.

For Tanzania, however, the occasion represents a historic milestone and an opportunity to test themselves against one of Africa’s most consistent football powers.

The Taifa Stars qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in their AFCON history after a disciplined group-stage performance that showcased resilience, tactical organisation and growing belief.

While few expect them to progress beyond this stage, Tanzania arrive with confidence and a sense of freedom that could make them dangerous opponents.

Morocco, ranked among Africa’s elite, are chasing a continental crown that has eluded them since 1976.

Despite impressive runs in recent tournaments, including a historic World Cup semi-final appearance in 2022, AFCON success has remained stubbornly out of reach.

Head coach Walid Regragui has consistently warned his players against complacency, stressing that knockout football demands mental sharpness as much as technical quality.

“The group stage is behind us. Now every mistake can end your journey,” Regragui has said repeatedly, reminding his squad that AFCON is notorious for punishing lapses in concentration.

With passionate home support expected to fill the stadium in Rabat, Morocco will rely on experienced leaders to maintain composure.

Captain Romain Saïss anchors the defence alongside Achraf Hakimi, whose influence stretches far beyond the right flank.

“At this stage, there are no favourites,” Saïss said ahead of the match.

“You win and continue, or you lose and go home. Tanzania are organised and motivated, and we must show humility and focus.”
Tanzania’s fearless approach

For Tanzania, reaching the Round of 16 has already surpassed expectations, but head coach Miguel Ángel Gamondi insists his side has not travelled to Morocco merely to make up the numbers.

Gamondi’s deep familiarity with Moroccan football could prove crucial. The Argentine tactician previously worked extensively in Morocco, gaining insight into the tactical trends, crowd dynamics and psychological pressure associated with playing the hosts.

That experience has shaped Tanzania’s approach, built around defensive discipline, compact lines and rapid counter-attacks.

The Taifa Stars are expected to absorb pressure and exploit spaces left by Morocco’s attacking full-backs.

Captain Mbwana Samatta will spearhead Tanzania’s attack and remains central to their hopes of springing a surprise.

“We respect Morocco, especially playing at home, but we are not afraid,” Samatta said. “It is 11 against 11. We believe we belong at this level and want to prove that our qualification was not a coincidence.”

History favours Morocco, but Tanzania can draw encouragement from past encounters. Their only victory over the Atlas Lions came during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, when goals from Thomas Ulimwengu and a Samatta brace sealed a memorable 3–1 win in Dar es Salaam.

More recently, Morocco edged Tanzania 1–0 in the quarter-finals of the 2024 African Nations Championship, a reminder of how fine the margins can be between the two sides.

As Morocco seek to avoid another early AFCON disappointment, Tanzania carry the weight of a nation enjoying its footballing breakthrough.
