Speaking at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology during a widows’ empowerment fundraiser on December 28, 2025, Oburu described the partnership with UDA as a continuation of a “broad-based government” approach initiated by his late brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“Raila built a platform for a broad-based government, and we will continue that arrangement beyond 2027 depending on how well the current regime serves our people,” Oburu stated.
Oburu made it clear that as party leader, he will make key decisions on behalf of ODM, urging critics and doubters to respect his authority.
He stressed that the party will negotiate hard to secure larger roles in government to protect the interests of regions where ODM has strong support, particularly Nyanza.
“I am the party leader, and all decisions will be final under my leadership. Those with doubts should take note — ODM will claim a bigger share in the next government,” he said.
He further highlighted that ODM represents all Kenyans and that while the party engages in talks with UDA, it will focus on ensuring that the regions it dominates receive fair representation and development opportunities.
Oburu praised President Ruto for prioritizing Nyanza’s development, which he said had been neglected by previous governments.

He noted that the current administration had avoided divisive politics and ensured the region received its fair share of resources.
“The current government recognizes our people’s needs and has helped Nyanza secure resources previously denied. We hope this continues so residents feel included in national development,” Oburu added.
Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi echoed Oburu’s sentiments, saying President Ruto remains the best choice for 2027.

Wandayi emphasized that leadership at the national level directly impacts development in Nyanza, noting that past neglect was due to a lack of strong advocacy for the region’s interests.
“Previous leaders represented us, but development stalled because our community’s voice was not effectively promoted. This government has begun to change that,” Wandayi said.
