Boxer Anthony Joshua Injured in Fatal Car Crash in Nigeria

British former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries in a car accident in Nigeria’s Ogun State on Monday, December 29, 2025, which left two people dead, authorities confirmed.

Ogun State Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when the vehicle collided with another car. Joshua, 36, was seated in the rear of the vehicle and is receiving medical attention.

“The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua was involved in an accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” Babaseyi said.

Witnesses and officials reported that the SUV, which Joshua was in with three other passengers, lost control while overtaking and struck a stationary truck by the side of the road. Two passengers—one beside the driver and another beside Joshua—died on the scene.

A spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said preliminary investigations suggest the Lexus was travelling above the speed limit at the time of the crash.

Joshua, who has British-Nigerian heritage, had been spending time in Nigeria following his December 19 victory over YouTuber-turned-fighter Jake Paul. He had returned to the ring after a 15-month hiatus and is expected to face long-time rival Tyson Fury in 2026.

Social media posts show Joshua being assisted out of the wrecked vehicle, appearing in discomfort but otherwise stable.
