New information is coming out about the investigation into gospel singer Rachel Wandeto's killing, with detectives now thinking there might be a bigger, more personal reason for the brutal attack that left the whole country stunned.
The police have named Josiah Njeru Njiri as the main suspect, someone who was reportedly close to Wandeto as her regular taxi driver. DCI homicide detectives caught him in Kasarani as the investigation started to pick up speed.
Police sources say investigators aren't seeing Wandeto's tattoo, the one connected to President William Ruto, as the main reason for the attack anymore, even though that was a big public discussion early on.
Instead, detectives are now looking at claims about money, personal arguments, and maybe a love triangle.
Investigators think the suspect might have assumed Wandeto had recently gotten money from people or places she'd visited, including State House.
Now, officials are trying to figure out if money arguments or personal issues could have played a part in her death.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin confirmed they'll be bringing the suspect to court, as police want to keep him for more time to continue their investigation. Detectives are also on the hunt for other suspects they believe were involved in what happened.
Wandeto was attacked on May 16 near 11th Street, off Obama Road in Mwiki, Kasarani. Investigators say she was assaulted, then had a flammable substance poured on her and was set on fire, leaving her with terrible injuries.
They rushed her to Kenyatta National Hospital with burns covering almost seventy-five percent of her body. Even though doctors worked hard to save her, she passed away two days later, on May 18.
These latest findings now suggest that this murder investigation is more about personal connections, money, and maybe revenge, rather than just politics.
