The Jubilee Party has strongly defended the continued involvement of former President Uhuru Kenyatta in active politics, arguing that political interference and prolonged internal disputes within the party forced him to remain engaged even after leaving office.
Speaking during a morning radio interview on Tuesday, Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni said the former Head of State had initially planned to retire quietly from frontline politics after completing his second term. However, according to Kioni, circumstances within both government and opposition politics made that difficult.
Kioni claimed that Uhuru’s political agenda faced resistance during the final years of his presidency from leaders who were then in opposition as well as others who have since changed political positions. He argued that the former president was denied the political space needed to smoothly transition out of active leadership.
According to the Jubilee official, continued court battles and leadership wrangles within the party also played a major role in keeping Uhuru politically active.

He said the former president has remained engaged largely to protect the party from collapse and preserve its stability during a turbulent period.
Kioni further revealed that Uhuru had hoped to hand over leadership of the Jubilee Party to a younger generation and create room for youth participation in national politics.

He maintained that the former president’s long-term vision was to step away from direct party operations and allow new leaders to emerge.
However, disputes over control of the party reportedly disrupted those plans, forcing Uhuru to continue taking an active role in defending the party’s identity and future direction.
The remarks come at a time when Uhuru’s continued political influence has attracted growing national attention. Although he officially retired from office following the 2022 General Election, the former president has remained visible in regional diplomacy, mediation efforts, and local political realignments.
Recently, Uhuru travelled to Uganda where he attended a state dinner hosted by President Yoweri Museveni ahead of Museveni’s inauguration ceremony in Kampala. The event brought together regional leaders, diplomats, and international delegations from across Africa.
At the same time, Jubilee Party has increasingly been linked to opposition reorganization efforts ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The party is reportedly backing former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i as one of the possible opposition figures capable of mounting a strong challenge in the next presidential race.
Political analysts believe Kioni’s remarks were intended to counter criticism from leaders allied to President William Ruto who have repeatedly urged Uhuru to retire fully from political activities.
Despite the criticism, Jubilee officials insist that Uhuru remains an important stabilizing figure within the party and continues to play a strategic role in shaping opposition politics and coalition-building efforts ahead of 2027.
The debate over Uhuru’s political future now reflects broader tensions within Kenya’s evolving political landscape, where retired leaders continue to wield influence while new alliances and succession battles steadily take shape.
