Dorcas Gachagua Reveals Why She Paid for Their First Date

Pastor Dorcas Gachagua has opened up about the early days of her relationship with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, revealing that she paid for their first dinner date.

Speaking during a television interview on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, Dorcas said she did that deliberately to establish equality in the relationship.

Dorcas said she did not want to appear dependent or to be viewed as someone waiting to be catered for simply because she was dating a man.

According to her, paying on their first date was symbolic—she wanted to demonstrate mutual respect and to show that she could support the relationship just like him.

“When we met, I insisted on paying for our first dinner. I did it so that he could see me as an equal partner from the beginning,” she shared.

Dorcas and Rigathi have maintained a strong public image as family-oriented leaders. Their appearances at church events, community programmes, and family gatherings often highlight unity and faith.

Dorcas, who recently moved from being a bishop to becoming an ordained reverend, continues to lead ministry initiatives focused on rehabilitation, mentorship, widows, and vulnerable groups.

During her ordination ceremony, Rigathi publicly expressed pride in her work and spoke about how the family supports her calling financially. He revealed that tithing has remained a standing principle within their home.

“From every income our family receives, the boys and I give ten per cent to support her ministry,” he previously stated.

He added that the commitment continued even during difficult political seasons. He recalled moments in 2022 when campaign pressures forced him to sell assets, but he still prioritised setting aside ten per cent for Dorcas’ work.

To him, this was not just about financial contribution—it represented loyalty to a shared mission.
Standing Together Through Transitions

The couple has been through intense political seasons, public scrutiny, and shifting leadership roles. Despite these transitions, Dorcas said she has always felt supported.

Sources close to the family recall how, even when Rigathi was engulfed in national politics, he made time to accompany her to ministry activities and church events.

Dorcas pointed out that families thrive when individuals commit to uplifting one another instead of competing.

“Anyone in a relationship must be intentional about support. When your partner is winning, the whole family is winning,” she noted.

During the same televised discussion, Dorcas shifted into giving advice to her audience. She emphasized that the people one surrounds themselves with play a big role in shaping their future.

She encouraged Kenyans—especially young people—to avoid environments where their ambitions are dismissed or where negativity drains their energy.

“As believers, the company we keep matters. We need people who make us grow, not those who drain us,” she advised.

Her message reflected her ongoing campaign focusing on mental wellness, youth mentorship, and empowerment programmes.

Dorcas’ openness regarding her relationship and financial independence sparked public conversations online.

Many young women praised her for showing that partnership should not be transactional or defined by financial expectations.

Analysts also observed that her story challenges the stereotype that men must handle all expenses during early dating stages.

Others commended her for stressing independence, personal responsibility, and equality.
More Than a Love Story

To many Kenyans, what stands out is not just that Dorcas paid for the first dinner, but the significance behind it:

She wanted equity in her marriage

She wanted respect built on partnership

She wanted to contribute without feeling inferior

And she wanted a home where values were shared—not demanded
