BAT Kenya Announces Major Leadership Changes as Achola and Kipkemoi Exit

British American Tobacco Kenya (BAT Kenya) has announced a major leadership transition involving the departure of two senior executives and the appointment of new directors as part of a planned restructuring of the company’s management team.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the company confirmed that its Managing Director, Crispin Achola, will step down from his role on June 15, 2026, after serving for more than five years.

Achola joined BAT Kenya as Managing Director on January 1, 2021, overseeing the company during a period marked by regulatory shifts and evolving market conditions.

According to the company, Achola will remain available during the transition period to ensure continuity and stability in operations before pursuing other professional opportunities outside the organization.

“Under his leadership, this period has been marked by strong guidance through cross-market crisis experience and commercial acumen,” the company said in its statement.

“He has guided the company through complex regulatory and market transitions, bringing over 30 years of cross-market experience and commercial insight.”

BAT Kenya also confirmed that its Finance Director, Philemon Kipkemoi, will leave the company on March 31, 2026.

Kipkemoi has been part of the BAT Group for nearly two decades, serving in several senior finance positions across East and Southern Africa.

The company’s board expressed appreciation for both executives, acknowledging their dedication and contributions during their tenure.

“The Board of Directors expresses its enormous appreciation and thanks Crispin and Philemon for their leadership, professionalism, dedication and lasting contribution to the company. We wish them every success in their future endeavours,” the statement read.

To fill the leadership positions, BAT Kenya has appointed Sidney Wafula as the incoming Managing Director. He will officially assume the role on June 16, 2026.

Wafula previously served as Finance Director for BAT Kenya and currently holds the same role for BAT Sub-Saharan Africa.

He has worked within the BAT Group since 2006, holding several senior positions including Head of Finance for BAT Egypt in Cairo.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting from Catholic University of Eastern Africa and is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya.

Meanwhile, Catherine Chepkong’a has been appointed as the new Finance Director, effective April 1, 2026. She joined the BAT Group in 2012 and has held several leadership roles in finance across different markets.

Her previous roles include Head of Finance for Uganda, Finance Controller for East Africa and Southern Markets, and Head of Markets for the Horn of Africa.

Most recently, she served as Finance Controller at Strathmore University Business School in Kenya.

Chepkong’a is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya.
