Kenyan Stars in Europe: Vyner Shines as Silko Amari Scores in Defeat

Harambee Stars’ European-based prospects, Zak Vyner and Thomas Silko Amari, had contrasting fortunes in their respective English Championship matches on Boxing Day, Friday, December 26, 2025.
Vyner’s Bristol City Maintains Winning Run

Bristol City secured a crucial 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion, moving up to sixth place in the Championship standings. An early strike from Anis Mehmeti, just four minutes into the match, set the tone for the Robins’ win.

Despite West Brom’s late surge and a shot that hit the post in the dying minutes, Bristol held on to claim all three points. This victory marked back-to-back league wins for the club, ending the year on a high.

Speaking after the match, Bristol City’s coach praised the team’s performance, particularly the way they executed their game plan and maintained composure under pressure.

Zak Vyner, the 28-year-old versatile fullback, continued his assured displays in defence, having marked a significant milestone in October by reaching 218 appearances for Bristol City.

His consistency and reliability have cemented his role as a key component of the team’s backline.

Meanwhile, Kenyan prospect Thomas Silko Amari Otieno made a brief appearance for Leicester City in their 2-1 loss to Watford FC.

Introduced in the 87th minute, Silko Amari was the sole bright spot for the Foxes, scoring the team’s consolation goal.

Leicester City initially led through Jordan James in the 7th minute, but Watford rallied with goals from Morocco’s Othmane Maamma and Mattie Pollock to snatch the victory.

The defeat followed a heavy 4-1 loss to Queens Park Rangers in Leicester’s previous match, leaving them 13th in the Championship table with 31 points.

In another League Two fixture, Clarke Oduor was absent as Grimsby Town played to a goalless draw against Oldham Athletic on Boxing Day. Grimsby will return to action on Monday, December 29, when Shrewsbury Town visits Blundell Park.
Looking Ahead

With Vyner’s consistent performances, Bristol City aims to maintain momentum as they push for a top-six finish in the Championship.

Leicester City, despite setbacks, will look to bounce back in upcoming fixtures, while Clarke Oduor and Grimsby Town hope to find form in the closing stages of the season.

Kenyan football fans will be watching closely as their homegrown talents continue to make an impact abroad, demonstrating the growing presence of Harambee Stars’ players in European football.
