Netanyahu Reaffirms Israel’s Protection of Christians in Easter Message

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has extended Easter greetings to Christians around the world, reaffirming Israel’s commitment to protecting Christian communities even amid rising regional tensions.

In a message shared on April 5, 2026, Netanyahu wished Christians in Israel, the United States, and globally a joyful Easter celebration.

He emphasized that while Christians face persecution in several countries, Israel remains a safe haven where religious freedom is upheld.

His remarks come at a time of heightened conflict following the outbreak of direct hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The situation escalated after joint military operations reportedly targeted Iranian leadership, triggering retaliatory strikes and increasing instability across the region.

Despite the tensions, Netanyahu highlighted that Israel continues to safeguard Christian holy sites, particularly in Jerusalem, which holds deep religious significance. He reiterated that all believers should be able to worship freely and safely.

Israel’s Christian population, estimated at between 185,000 and 190,000 people, has been steadily growing, contrasting with declining Christian communities in neighboring countries. Many Christians in Israel, particularly in cities like Nazareth and Haifa, enjoy full citizenship rights and access to education and public life.

However, in countries such as Syria and Nigeria, reports indicate continued persecution, contributing to migration and shrinking Christian populations. These trends have been highlighted in global monitoring reports on religious freedom.

Meanwhile, global leaders have called for de-escalation. Pope Leo XIV urged dialogue and peace, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and preserve cultural heritage amid ongoing military actions.

Netanyahu concluded his message with a call for hope and renewal, encouraging Christians everywhere to embrace the spirit of Easter despite global uncertainties.
