Cherargei Claims Sifuna Poses Risk to Broad-Based Government

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has launched a sharp attack on Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, accusing him of undermining the broad-based government and calling for his removal from the party leadership.

In a post shared on X on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Cherargei claimed that Sifuna’s leadership within ODM had become a liability.

He accused the Nairobi senator of engaging in political tactics that threaten cooperation within the broad-based government.

Cherargei argued that Sifuna should step aside from his position as ODM Secretary General, saying the move would allow him to freely join what he described as a divided opposition.

His remarks added to growing political tensions as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The senator’s comments appeared to be a response to recent statements by Sifuna, who has insisted that ODM’s future direction should be determined by grassroots members rather than a small group of top leaders.

Speaking earlier, Sifuna said decisions about the party’s position in 2027 would be made after consulting Kenyans at the ground level.

He also criticised leaders who prioritise personal or regional interests over national development, saying true leadership should focus on projects that benefit the country as a whole.

The exchange comes at a time when political debate has intensified following the cooperation between President William Ruto and ODM founder Raila Odinga, which led to the formation of the broad-based government.

Despite the online disagreement, ODM leaders have recently shown unity during condolence visits to the family of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a road accident.

Party leader Oburu Odinga led a delegation to Jirongo’s home in Lumakanda, where leaders contributed funds towards funeral arrangements. Sifuna was among those present and donated KSh100,000, along with additional support for the youth.

Other ODM leaders, including Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ and Governor Gladys Wanga, also made financial contributions during separate visits.
