Malaysian Prime Minister Begins 2-Day Visit to Kenya to Boost Cooperation

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Nairobi on Sunday, November 23, 2025, for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening long-standing ties between Kenya and Malaysia.

He was received at the airport by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who said the visit builds on more than six decades of cooperation between the two nations.

Mudavadi said discussions during the visit will centre on expanding collaboration in areas such as affordable housing, digital economy, education, trade, tourism and infrastructure development.
Focus on investment in housing and the digital economy

In a message shared on X, Mudavadi noted that several Malaysian companies have already expressed interest in Kenya’s ambitious housing and infrastructure plans.

He said the visit would offer an opportunity to explore partnerships that could accelerate development in these sectors.

“Our discussions will focus on strengthening this long-standing partnership, especially in affordable housing and the digital economy. Malaysian companies have shown strong interest in contributing to Kenya’s housing and infrastructure agenda,” Mudavadi posted.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary added that Kenya is keen on attracting investors with experience in large-scale construction, technology solutions and smart city development.

Tourism is also a major focus of the visit. Kenya and Malaysia are exploring ways to jointly promote their destinations, enhance cultural exchanges and expand cooperation with global tourism organisations.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano recently announced that the sector recorded strong performance in 2024, attracting over 2.4 million international visitors and generating Ksh452 billion in revenue. The industry now supports more than 1.1 million direct jobs and over three million indirect jobs.

Miano noted that Kenya is diversifying its tourism offerings beyond wildlife and beaches, with growing interest in cultural tourism, adventure activities, culinary tourism and wellness travel.

She said efforts to simplify travel—such as improving the electronic travel authorisation system and easing visa processes—have made Kenya more attractive to global visitors.

Events like the Magical Kenya Travel Expo, which recently hosted more than 400 exhibitors and 5,000 delegates, continue to raise the country’s profile internationally.

Prime Minister Anwar’s trip comes at a time when Kenya is pushing forward major infrastructure plans. President William Ruto has announced intentions to dual at least 1,000 kilometres of highways and build more than 10,000 kilometres of new tarmac roads.

He has also pledged to complete the Standard Gauge Railway extension from Naivasha to Malaba, which is expected to enhance regional transport and trade.

Mudavadi said he is optimistic the Malaysian visit will produce agreements that deepen economic cooperation, support innovation and create opportunities for citizens of both countries.

The official meetings are expected to begin on Monday, with both governments expressing commitment to strengthening a partnership that has lasted over 60 years.
