Gachagua Blasts Citizen TV’s Stephen Letoo Over Bias Reporting

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused several media outlets of intentionally misreporting his statements and portraying him as dishonest following comments he made during a political event in Nairobi.

Speaking on Wednesday, December 3, during a celebration event for newly elected Members of County Assembly (MCAs), Gachagua firmly criticized Citizen TV reporter Stephen Letoo, claiming the journalist published a story that did not reflect what happened on Sunday.

According to Gachagua, the reports that circulated after a Thanksgiving ceremony in Kariobangi North painted a completely false picture of the chaotic incident that unfolded at the church.

He insisted that his team was attacked by a group of criminals who were later chased away by members of the congregation, only for them to return accompanied by police officers armed with guns.

Gachagua alleged that even the area OCS lobbed a teargas canister inside the church, yet Letoo reported that police officers were only separating two violent groups.

“That is a lie,” Gachagua said, accusing the journalist of bending the truth despite witnessing the situation firsthand.

The former DP also took issue with the way his Sunday remarks about Nairobi’s political landscape were reported.

He explained that he never claimed that his party, the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), would take all major seats in the capital on its own.

Instead, he said he was referring to the broader United Opposition coalition, of which DCP is a member.

Gachagua noted that he only pointed out voting patterns in Nairobi, which have traditionally favoured the opposition, making it possible for the coalition to secure 16 out of the 17 parliamentary seats in the county.

He accused certain media houses of deliberately twisting his message to create tension between DCP and other opposition partners.

Gachagua dismissed suggestions that DCP intended to field only candidates from the Kikuyu community in Nairobi.

He argued that every Kenyan community has a right to seek political representation and that portraying DCP as tribal was another attempt by the media to undermine him.

“Let nobody make me feel like I am committing a political crime by promoting my party,” he said.

Gachagua maintained that the United Opposition remains strong and united, despite attempts from outsiders to divide it. He promised to continue strengthening DCP in Nairobi and other regions.

His remarks came shortly after Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also dismissed claims that Wiper had agreed to withdraw candidates in favour of DCP in Nairobi.

Kalonzo said such reports were pure propaganda meant to cause friction within the coalition.

He emphasized that the coalition partners would make decisions together and that no such deal had been reached.

To address concerns about internal party democracy, Gachagua assured supporters that DCP’s nominations will be transparent and open to candidates from all communities.

He urged the media to report responsibly and stop spreading stories that he believes are helping President William Ruto push misleading narratives.
